Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has criticized the decisions of referee João Pinheiro regarding handball incidents involving Paris Saint-Germain players during the second leg of the Champions League semifinal.
On Wednesday, Bayern drew 1-1 at home with PSG, exiting the tournament 4-5 on aggregate after two legs. In the first half, the ball struck the arm of PSG defender Nuno Mendes, who was already on a yellow card. Later, PSG midfielder João Neves handled the ball in the penalty area, but the referee decided against awarding a penalty.
“For me, that was a clear second yellow card. Absolutely obvious! Somehow a free kick was awarded against us. And that incident was certainly a decisive moment of the game. Then we saw a scene like this: Neves’ hand is raised, the ball hits his hand. And the explanation was that it hit his own player. But his own player was ten meters away from him!” Kompany told Bild.
Bayern dominated possession and created chances but couldn’t find the net until a late equalizer from Harry Kane in stoppage time. The result means PSG advance to the Champions League final, while Bayern’s season ends in disappointment.
