Wesley Van Beck’s Brief Return: Under Seven Minutes After Nearly a Month Off for La Laguna Tenerife

Van Beck’s return to the court slipped under the radar, coming during an inconsequential matchup where La Laguna Tenerife had little at stake—a third-place duel in the Champions League—and lasting just 6 minutes and 31 seconds. Yet for the American guard, those minutes on Saturday in Badalona marked his first game action since April 11.

Nearly a month off for a player who was once a key contributor in the first half of the season for the aurinegro squad. Van Beck found a spot in Txus Vidorreta’s rotation on Saturday thanks to the unfortunate combination of Rokas de Giedraitis’s knee injury in Thursday’s semifinal and Marcelinho Huertas being rested. Scrubb replaced the Lithuanian in the lineup, while the American took Huertas’s place. Against Unicaja—who ultimately claimed the bronze medal—Van Beck scored six points (2/3 from three) and posted a +5 efficiency rating in just over six and a half minutes on the floor at the Olímpic de Badalona.

Nearly a month absent, the Texan has seen little playing time and minimal contribution. He hadn’t suited up for La Laguna Tenerife since April 11, in a Liga Endesa game against Girona. That night, Van Beck logged only 3 minutes and 46 seconds, didn’t score a single basket, and never even attempted a shot—his specialty—finishing with a negative efficiency rating (-3). By then, he had become a regular scratch in both domestic competition and the Champions League.

His last Champions League appearance came in Trieste (March 17, the final round of the Round of 16, where Canarias had already secured first place in the group), and his last Liga Endesa game was March 1, when the aurinegro rolled past Valencia Basket (89-71) at the Santiago Martín. Van Beck scored 14 points in 18 minutes that night.

Downhill in March, vanished in April. Although April was the month when Van Beck’s participation plummeted, his situation had already shifted since mid-March. From March 18 onward (right after the trip to Trieste), the American has seen only 10 minutes and 17 seconds of action, spread across two games (against Girona and Unicaja). That’s two appearances in 12 possible contests, and just 10 minutes out of the team’s total 480 minutes across Liga Endesa and BCL—a mere 2% of the total playing time.

Signed last summer by the Canarian club, the shooting guard started the season hampered by back problems that kept him from playing initially. Once healthy, he enjoyed unquestionable continuity despite persistent foul trouble (he often picked up early infractions, forcing Vidorreta to manage his minutes). Van Beck played in every ACB round from Round 6 to Round 22.

His overall stats in the domestic competition: 19 games (17 consecutive plus appearances in rounds 2 and 26), averaging 13.33 minutes, 8.8 points, and 6.8 efficiency rating. However, his most notable average is his incredible three-point shooting: a stunning 56% (38 of 68), one of the best percentages in Liga history. In the BCL, he averaged 14 minutes, 9.5 points, and 8.4 efficiency over 10 games.

The hidden enemy: squad restrictions. His main obstacle hasn’t been a drop in performance or Vidorreta’s faith in him, nor physical health or his foul management (which never helped). It’s the famous “cupos”—the requirement to field a limited number of foreign players. This invisible hand has pushed Van Beck out of the rotation, despite his efficiency when given minutes.
