UEFA has sanctioned Shakhtar Donetsk and AEK Larnaca following discriminatory behavior by their fans during Conference League matches against Crystal Palace. The governing body announced the penalties on Tuesday.
The Cypriot club AEK Larnaca was fined €50,000 (approximately $54,000) and will face a partial stadium closure for their next home match in UEFA competitions. The punishment stems from discriminatory chants made by supporters during the round of 16 clash in March.
Shakhtar Donetsk received a €30,000 (roughly $32,000) fine for illicit chanting and displaying an unauthorized banner during the first leg of the semifinals in April. Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the team played that match in Krakow, Poland.
The Ukrainian club also incurred an additional €4,000 (about $4,300) fine for their fans’ use of fireworks. UEFA additionally ordered a partial stadium closure for Shakhtar, but this penalty is suspended for a two-year probationary period.
Crystal Palace will face Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final, scheduled for May 27 in Leipzig, Germany.
