Northamptonshire (1pt) trail Derbyshire (4pts) by 506 runs with six wickets remaining

Brooke Guest smashed his first century in nearly three years, putting Derbyshire in a commanding position on the second day of their Division Two clash against Northamptonshire.

The wicketkeeper’s 141, combined with Martin Andersson’s 106, formed a vital 241-run sixth-wicket partnership. Derbyshire declared on 604-7, the sixth-highest total in the county’s history.

Northamptonshire crumbled after tea against Ben Aitchison and Rory Haydon, who each claimed two wickets. Calvin Harrison and James Sales steadied the ship, reaching 98-4 at stumps, still 506 runs behind.

Derbyshire’s dominance faced a brief challenge from Harry Conway’s sharp pace spell, removing the overnight pair in consecutive overs. Conway trapped Wayne Madsen lbw for 59 and denied Caleb Jewell a century, dismissing him for 94.

Any hopes Northants had of ending the innings quickly evaporated as Guest and Andersson took control. Guest pulled Conway for six over fine leg, and a fourth batting point was secured when Andersson cut George Scrimshaw for four.

The runs flowed after lunch, with Guest celebrating his first hundred since July 2023, followed by Andersson reaching his second of the season. Northants finally broke the stand when Andersson tried to whip Nathan McSweeney through mid-wicket. The declaration came after Guest missed a slog-sweep, becoming McSweeney’s second victim.

This was the second time this season Derbyshire passed 600, leaving Northants needing 455 to avoid the follow-on. That target seemed distant as Aitchison struck early, tempting Ricardo Vasconcelos to edge behind. After tea, Haydon produced a superb ball to dismiss Luke Proctor, knocking over his off stump.

Scoreboard pressure led to further wickets: McSweeney caught behind attempting a leg glance, and Saif Zaib flashing at a wide delivery from Haydon, giving Guest his 200th first-class dismissal for Derbyshire. Zak Chappell applied pressure with a probing spell, while England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir commanded respect with a six-over spell costing just 10 runs.

Harrison and Sales fought back, adding 60 runs together, but the visitors face a tough task over the final two days to avoid defeat.
